REMIXING THE PLANET

Paul D. Miller aka DJ Spooky is a conceptual artist, writer, and musician working in New York. His work as a media artist has appeared in a wide variety of contexts such as the Whitney Biennial. I found his book "rhythm science" at the MoMa store and it made me curious. With this book DJ Spooky delivers a manifesto for the creation of art from the flow of patterns in sound and culture. Very interesting to read and I like the music! Also check out this movie.

LIQUID CARDBOARD

At cardboard design everything is made of recycled cardboard: small accessories like vases, but also larger items like chairs, shelfs and even playhouses for kids, just to name a few. Print Icon is currently selling a range of the cardboard design products in their store in Manhattan. Particularly fascinating are the items that they call liquid cardboard. Each one can transform into many different shapes from vases, bowls, platters, candle holders, a stress toy or a very cool decoration. A true case of form follows function. PLAYFUL JEWELLERY

I saw this necklace at Debbie Fishers store in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn, where she works together with a few employees. Debbie not only sells her own jewellery, but also rings, necklaces and earrings by her friend Eric. The above shown necklace is his work. The chain is made out of beads and the pendant is porcelaine. I find the mixture of materials quite nice. The collection comes in various colors. Unfortunately Erics jewellery is not shown on Debbies website, but she has nice pieces too. If I find out more, I’ll let you know. In the meantime check out www.debbiefisher.com

PILLOW TALK

Artist Jonathan Horowitz has teamed up with Art Production Fund's WOW as well as Calvin Klein to create cheeky pillow cases with names of iconic couples like Barack and Michelle, John and Yoko, Siegfried and Roy, Lindsay and Sam, Mom and Dad, and naturally Mom and Mom or Dad and Dad. The “Pillow Talk” work is shown at the artist’s solo show "And/Or" at P.S.1 which is on view through September 14.

PARK IN THE SKY

Recycled, green, and chic. This is what sustainable design looks like now. The High Line, a former elevated freight railroad, is probably one  of the most revolutionary public parks of New York. It’s a mile-and-a-half-long and is running through the West Side neighborhoods. The park features an integrated landscape, combining meandering concrete pathways with naturalistic plantings. The design is a patchwork of new and old, man-made and organic – a design in which nature is seamlessly integrated into the architecture. The High Line is designed by landscape architects James Corner Field Operations, with architects Diller Scofidio + Renfro. For more pictures, check out the photoalbums.

LEGEND OF THE NEW YORK UNDERGROUND

When I was introduced to John Zorns music for the first time, I only got to know the experimental aspect of the entire range. It wasn’t up until about a year ago, when I discovered the impressive variety of his work. I bought several of his albums and am still avid fo his music!
John Zorn was born in New York City and is a native of the Lower East Side. He has written film scores and cartoon soundtracks, and has composed several works for a variety of instrumentation. Zorn collaborates with acclaimed musicians such as Marc Ribot, Fred Frith or Mike Patton (Mr. Bungle, Faith No More). In the documentary listed below you can get an insight into John Zorns compositional method in which he jots down diverse ideas and images on filing cards, which are then sorted and ordered to provide the composition's structure. Very inspiring!

SILK SCREEN-PRINTED MUST HAVES

Yesterday these beautiful cards caught my attention at a store in Carroll Gardens. In the meantime I found out, that the designer is British born illustrator Jane Buck. She maufactures the cards and many more products like organic t-shirts and tote bags under the label Foxy & Winston at her studio in Red Hook, Brooklyn. The designs are individually silk screen-printed by hand, using non toxic Swiss inks. Head on over to Foxy & Winston’s shop to check out all of the designs!
